Purchase a License Plate in Alberta

In Alberta, a valid License plate must be displayed on your vehicle at all times. We can help with all License plate services, including purchasing a new one, transferring a plate to a new vehicle, replacing a lost, stolen or damaged plate, or returning a License plate.

What you need to purchase a License plate

Visit us in person at Registrations Are Us to purchase a License plate with one of our registry agents. You will need:

  • Your driver’s License
  • Proof of vehicle ownership, such as a Bill of Sale or Lease Agreemen
  • Proof of valid insurance (pink slip)
  • NVIS (New Vehicle Information Statement)

Once you’ve purchased your License plate, it must be displayed in one of these places:

  • On the back of your vehicle
  • On the front of your vehicle, if the vehicle is a tractor-trailer
  • On the back mudguard or back fender, if your vehicle is a motorcycle

You can renew your License plates in Alberta online or in person at our registry office. Online renewal requires your registration renewal notice and valid insurance. In-person requires providing your most current registration, proof of insurance, and payment.

If your License plates are lost or stolen in Alberta, you should report the loss to the local law enforcement agency and obtain a police report. Then, visit us at Registrations Are Us to apply for replacement plates. You’ll need to provide the police report, identification, and payment for the replacement fee.
