You can customize your plate with any unique message that’s fit to print. There are rules that apply when personalizing a License plate, and we must submit your request to Alberta Registries for approval.

Have a unique idea for a License plate?

Find out if the License plate you want is available by contacting the Registrations Are Us office. We recommend you have two or three alternate choices in case your first choice is not available. When your personalized License plate arrives, visit us to return your current plate and transfer the remaining registration term to your new personalized License plate.

Your plate must follow these guidelines:

  • must be letters and/or numbers – special characters are not permitted, including – (hyphen), ’ (apostrophe), ! (exclamation mark), ? (question mark)
  • have a minimum of 1 character and/or a maximum of 7 characters for regular plates
  • have a minimum of 1 character and/or a maximum of 5 characters for motorcycle plates

How to apply for a personalized License plate

Visit Registrations Are Us and bring your Alberta driver’s License to place your order. After the personalized License plate is issued, an exchange fee will be required to transfer the current registration to the new plate. Going forward, only the standard vehicle registration renewal fee is required.

When personalizing a plate, you can’t use:

  • Text that Is similar to a plate that already exists
  • The letter O, only a 0 (zero) may be used
  • Foul language
  • Sexual connotations
  • Political slurs
  • Illegal acts
  • Ethnic slurs
  • Religious slurs
  • Text that may cause identification problems, such as MLA, Mayor,Doctor, etc.
  • Abbreviations that may be offensive
  • Words that are offensive when translated
  • References to alcoholic beverages, controlled substances or paraphernalia
  • A configuration used by Motor Vehicles for regular License plates

Yes. You can request a change to your specialty plate within 90 days after the order is placed. You must return both unused License plates and exchange the unused plate for a new personalized plate.

Yes. You can transfer a personalized plate to:

  • An immediate family member
  • A company and the company owner, when the person is the only owner of the company
