Guide before Road Test in Edmonton

What you need to know before your test

We kindly request that you arrive for your road test 30 minutes early; this will ensure that any necessary paperwork is completed before your test begins. This also ensures that road tests are completed on time.

The examiner will conduct a brief inspection of the vehicle to ensure it complies with the Government of Alberta standards.

You cannot take passengers or pets on the road test with you.

If you supply your own vehicle, please remember to have a valid registration certificate and valid proof of insurance.

The road test typically takes about 45 minutes for a Class 5 test. If you do not pass this test, you may take it again as soon as the next day; however, you will need to purchase another Road Test Permit when booking. We can assist with that.

  • Reinstatement Conditions
  • Age Restrictions
  • For Class 6 tests: To be eligible, you must have held at least a Class 7 learner’s licence for a minimum of one continuous year, and be at least 16 years of age.
  • Dates of Eligibility
  • Unpaid Fines
  • Medical Conditions
  • Parent/Guardian Consent
  • Proper Documentation (Insurance, Registration, etc)
  • Condition codes
  • If you have a condition code on your operator’s licence that requires you to take periodic road test examinations required by driver fitness monitoring, you may not be eligible to book online. Please contact the registry where you plan on taking your test before you book online.
  • If you are taking your road test at the request of a physician, you may not be eligible to book online. Please contact the registry where you plan on taking your road test before you book online.
  • You must hold a valid Alberta Operator’s Licence to be eligible for any road tests, regardless of the class. If you have an operator’s licence from another province or state, you must transfer your non-Alberta operator’s licence to the Alberta equivalent before you can take your road test. Failure to comply could result in the forfeiture of all fees related to your road test. For more details and inquiries, please contact Registrations Are Us.

If there is any doubt to your eligibility status, please contact the registry location where you plan to take your test and confirm your eligibility status before you reserve online.

To prepare for your road test in Alberta, consider the following steps:

  • Review the Alberta Driver’s Guide thoroughly, as it provides essential information on traffic rules and safe driving practices.
  • Practice driving in various road conditions, including city streets, highways, and residential areas.
  • Familiarize yourself with the vehicle you’ll be using for the test, including its controls and characteristics.
  • Practice parallel parking, three-point turns, and other maneuvers that are commonly tested.
  • Consider taking a driving lesson with a professional instructor to receive valuable feedback and guidance on your driving skills.

While you cannot bring a friend or family member into the vehicle during the actual road test, you are allowed to have someone accompany you to the testing location. This person can wait for you while you complete the test. However, it’s important to note that this individual cannot interfere with the testing process or communicate with you once the test begins. The road test is conducted with only you and the licenced examiner in the vehicle.

Each mistake you make will contribute points to your overall score, and you can receive up to three points for each error. Accumulating a total exceeding 75 points will result in an automatic failure of the test.
