Registering an Out-of-Province Motorcycle in Alberta | All You Need to Know

Registering an Out-of-Province Motorcycle in Alberta

You’ve just moved to Alberta or found your dream motorcycle out of province. But now you’re wondering: “How do I register it properly and get it on the road here?”

At Registrations Are Us, we make registering an out-of-province motorcycle a smooth and simple process. Here are the following steps you need to take to register your out-of-province motorcycle in Alberta.

Step 1: You’ll Need an Out-of-Province Inspection

Before anything else, your motorcycle needs to pass an Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection (OOP). Alberta law requires that your motorcycle meet local safety standards, particularly if it’s coming from outside the province.

Here’s how:

  • Stop by our registry office to purchase your inspection form. Make sure to bring proof of ownership and your valid identification.
  • Book an appointment with a licensed mechanic who’s authorized to do out-of-province inspections (we can recommend a few if you’re not sure where to go).
  • Bring your motorcycle and the form to your inspection.

Step 2: Gather Your Paperwork

Once the inspection is complete, gather all the essentials.

Here’s what you’ll need when you come back to us to register your motorcycle:

  • Inspection Certificate from a mechanic authorized to complete Alberta inspections. Note: this is only valid for 14 days.
  • Proof of Ownership (example: bill of sale or previous registration).
  • Alberta Auto Insurance (a pink slip for proof of insurance).
  • Valid ID (must be a photo ID).

Tip: For a more efficient process, make sure you have everything together and ready before your return visit.

Step 3: Head Back to the Registry

This is where you’ll provide all of your documentation and complete the registration process.

  • Bring all your documents to us at Registrations Are Us.
  • We’ll enter your inspection into the system and complete your registration.
  • Pay the applicable fees.
  • Receive an Alberta licence plate and registration certificate, and the process is complete.
