Mastering Parallel Parking Before You Book a Road Test in Edmonton October 29th, 2024 • 3 min read Ready to take your Alberta road test? Parallel parking is one of the most common maneuvers you’ll need to demonstrate. While it might seem intimidating at first, with practice and a clear understanding of the steps involved, you can confidently parallel park like a pro. Here’s a breakdown to help you succeed before you book a road test: 1. Find the Right Spot Look for a parking space that’s at least 1.5 times the length of your vehicle. This will give you enough room to maneuver. When you’ve found a spot, activate your right turn signal to signal your intention to park. 2. Position Your Vehicle Pull up alongside the vehicle in front of the empty space. Leave about two to three feet of space between your vehicle and the other vehicle, and align your rear bumpers. 3. Steering & Reversing Turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Slowly begin reversing, checking your mirrors and looking over your shoulder to monitor your surroundings. As your front bumper clears the rear bumper of the vehicle beside you, begin straightening your steering wheel. 4. Adjust Your Position Continue reversing slowly, checking your mirrors and looking over your shoulder. When your vehicle is at a 45-degree angle to the curb, turn your steering wheel all the way to the left. Continue reversing until your vehicle is parallel to the curb. 5. Straighten and Center Once your vehicle is parallel, straighten your steering wheel and adjust your position as needed. You should be within 30 centimeters (about 1 foot) of the curb. Make sure your vehicle is centered in the parking space. Practice Makes Perfect Parallel parking takes practice. Find a quiet street or empty parking lot to practice these steps until you feel comfortable. Remember to: Take your time: Don’t rush the maneuver. Use your mirrors and look over your shoulder: Be aware of your surroundings. Adjust as needed: It’s okay to pull forward and reposition your vehicle if necessary.
