Knowledge Test Overview for All Driver’s Licence Classes in Alberta

Knowledge Test for All Driver’s Licence Classes in Alberta

When it comes to getting or upgrading your Alberta driver’s licence, the Alberta Driver’s Licence Knowledge Test is one of the first steps. Whether you’re a new driver, looking to move up to a commercial licence, or adding an endorsement like air brakes, understanding how these tests work can help you feel confident and prepared.

What is the Knowledge Test?

The Knowledge Test for All Driver’s Licence Classes is designed to check your understanding of Alberta’s traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. It ensures that every driver has the foundational understanding needed to operate a vehicle safely and responsibly on Alberta’s roads.

Who Needs to Take a Knowledge Test?

  • New drivers – If you’re applying for your learner’s (Class 7) licence, you must pass the Class 7 knowledge test.
  • Drivers upgrading their licence – If you’re moving to a commercial licence (Class 1, 2, 3, or 4) or motorcycle licence (Class 6), a separate knowledge test is required.
  • Endorsements – Some drivers may need to complete additional tests, such as air brake or S-endorsement exams.

What to Expect During the Test

  • Format: Multiple-choice questions (30 per test).
  • Passing Grade: You must correctly answer at least 25 out of 30 questions.
  • Location: Tests are taken on-site at Registrations Are Us on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Languages: The Class 7 knowledge test is available in 25 languages, and English audio assistance is also available. Other classes must be taken in English, though paper English conversion dictionaries may be used for minimal assistance.
  • Retakes: If you don’t pass the first time, you can retake the test – but only once per day and with a new test fee.

Preparing for the Alberta Driver’s Licence Knowledge Test

The best way to prepare is by studying the Alberta Driver’s Guide for your specific licence class.

Practice tests are also available online and can be a great way to build confidence before the real exam.
