How to Get Your Motorcycle Licence in Edmonton

Motorcycle License in Edmonton

Few things are as exciting as the prospect of obtaining your motorcycle licence. While the thought of taking your motorcycle on the open road independently is an exciting one, it’s important first to obtain your class 6 driver’s licence, which allows you to legally operate a motorcycle in Alberta.

What You Need to Know

An Alberta class 6 driver’s licence empowers you to operate a motorcycle without a supervising rider, as well as to operate all class 5 motor vehicles as a learning driver.

To be eligible for a motorcycle licence in Edmonton, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age or 16 years with parental consent
  • Hold a valid class 7 learner’s licence or a class 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 driver’s licence for a minimum of one year

Taking the Test

There are two components when you test for your class 6 driver’s licence: a knowledge test and a road test.

Before taking the knowledge test, it’s important to spend time practising before your road test. Use your learner’s permit as much as you can while under the supervision of an experienced and licenced motorcycle driver to ensure you’re confident and to give yourself the best possible chance of success.

The knowledge test is 30 questions and covers topics such as road rules, safe driving, traffic signs, and licensing. The Alberta Rider’s Guide is an excellent resource to study for this test, providing you with everything you need to know about the safe operation of motorcycles, mopeds, and power-assisted bicycles.

Provided you’ve passed the knowledge test and are a capable motorcycle driver, you can take your road test. You can schedule your test with Registrations Are Us online or visit us in person to schedule an appointment. We offer road tests seasonally from April to October, provided road and weather conditions are favourable.

When you visit us for your road test appointment, please bring:

  • Your valid class 7, 5, 1, 2, 3, or 4 operator’s licence
  • Acceptable identification
  • Payment for your test and physical licence
