Alberta Driver’s Licence Renewal: How Soon Can You Act?

Drivers License Renewal

Depending on the class of your licence, as well as your age and medical status, your Alberta driver’s licence may be up for renewal every one to five years. It’s important to pay close attention to when your drivers licence renewal is due to avoid fines and penalties.

Here’s everything you need to know about renewing your driver’s licence in Alberta.

You Can Request a Driver’s Licence Renewal Early

Whether you’re going out of town, busy with work commitments, or simply like to be on top of things, you can renew your driver’s licence up to one year ahead of its expiration date. It’s also helpful to renew early if you’ve recently moved, as you’ll avoid paying additional fees to request a change of address on your licence.

It’s Important to Renew Your Driver’s Licence on Time

Driving without a valid licence is against the law in Alberta and could subject you to hefty fines and vehicle seizure. It’s also important to keep in mind that if your licence expired more than three years ago, you’ll be required to pass your written and road tests again before Registrations Are Us can issue you a new one. Furthermore, if the photo on your licence is more than four years old, you’ll need to take a new one for your driver’s licence renewal.

Registrations Are Us Can Provide Reminder Alerts

In recent years, the Alberta government has stopped sending mailout reminders for driver’s licence and ID card renewals, as well as for vehicle registration renewals. Registrations Are Us is happy to provide you with SMS or email reminder alerts when your driver’s licence is approaching its expiry date.

How to Renew Your Alberta Driver’s Licence

You can visit Registrations Are us in person for your Alberta driver’s licence renewal. You’ll need to bring your old driver’s licence with you, as well as additional identification if it’s been expired for more than six months.

Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Citizenship card

Your identification will need to be accompanied by a utility bill, land title, or residential lease agreement that shows your current legal address.

Furthermore, you’ll require a medical examination form completed by your physician if you’re 75 years of age or older, have a medical condition listed on your licence, or applying for a class 1, 2, or 4 driver’s licence renewal.
