A Quick Guide | Understanding Driver’s Licence Classes In Alberta

Understanding Driver's Licence Classes In Alberta

Navigating the world of driver’s licences in Alberta can feel overwhelming – but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re a new driver or looking to upgrade your licence, knowing the different driver’s licence classes in Alberta is essential for choosing the right path.

At Registrations Are Us, we’re here to guide you through the process and make it simple to book online for your Alberta road test, get the right vehicle, and pass with confidence.

Here is a simple guide for your reference:

What Are Alberta Driver’s Licence Classes?

Alberta has several licence classes depending on the type of vehicle you want to operate. Here’s a breakdown:

Class 1

The highest commercial licence. Allows you to drive semi-trailer trucks and all vehicles in Classes 2–5 (except motorcycles). Requires a written exam, air brake endorsement, Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program, medical exam, and road test.

Class 2 & 2S

For buses and larger passenger vehicles. Requires training, written exam, and, depending on the vehicle, proof of air brake certification (“Q” endorsement) and allows you to drive all the vehicles in classes 3, 4 and 5.

Class 3

Allows driving trucks with three or more axles and combinations of vehicles without air brakes. You can also operate Class 2 or 4 vehicles without passengers. It’s also Important to note that vehicles with air brakes must have the “Q” endorsement applied to the driver’s licence.

Class 4

For taxis, ambulances, and small buses with under 25 passengers. Requires written exams and a medical form; road test requirements have been removed.

Class 5 (GDL & Non-GDL)

The standard passenger vehicle licence. Class 5 GDL (Graduated Driver’s Licence) is probationary for new drivers, while non-GDL (advanced) is for drivers 18+ who have completed two years of probation, are suspension-free, and meet demerit requirements.

Class 6

For motorcycles and mopeds (50cc and over). Requires a Class 6 learner’s permit, written exam, and motorcycle road test. Rentals are available if you don’t have your own bike.

Class 7

The learner’s licence for new drivers under the Graduated Driver Licensing program. In Alberta, the minimum age is 14, and restrictions include a zero-alcohol level, a fully licensed accompanying driver, and limits on the number of passengers.

Why Understanding Licence Classes Matters

Choosing the right class ensures you’re legally allowed to operate the vehicles you need – whether it’s a car, truck, bus, or motorcycle. Each class has its own eligibility requirements, training, and testing standards, and being prepared can save time, fees, and frustration.
