How to Transfer Ownership of a Motorcycle in Alberta

Transfer Ownership of a Motorcycle in Alberta

Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, it’s important to understand the requirements of transferring ownership of a motorcycle in Alberta. If done incorrectly, it could mean tickets or fines. Understanding the process helps avoid these issues and ensures both parties are protected. Read on for details on how to ensure your transfer is seamless, legally binding, and complication-free.

Get the Bill of Sale

The bill of sale acts as confirmation of the sale. In Alberta, a bill of sale is required for all private vehicle sales, including motorcycles. To make it official, the document must include:

  • Identification of Parties: Full legal names and current home addresses of both the buyer and seller.
  • Date of Transaction: The precise date when the sale is finalized.
  • Vehicle Particulars: The make, model, and year of the motorcycle being transferred.
  • Unique Vehicle Identifier: The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the motorcycle.
  • Purchase Price: The agreed-upon purchase price of the motorcycle.
  • Legal Certifications: Original signatures of both the buyer and seller, confirming they agree on the sale.

Understand the Seller’s Responsibilities

Before the buyer can register the motorcycle in their name, the seller must:

  • Remove their license plate from the motorcycle.
  • Provide the purchaser with the following original documents:
    • The complete bill of sale or lease agreement.

Understand the Buyer’s Responsibilities

In order to transfer ownership of a motorcycle in Alberta, the buyer must:

  • Register the vehicle in their name in order to legally operate the vehicle on the roadway.
  • Purchase motorcycle insurance prior to registration – proof of insurance is mandatory at the time of registration.
  • Must present the following documents to the registry agent:
    • The bill of sale or lease agreement.
    • Valid proof of insurance.
    • Government-issued photo ID.
    • An out-of-province vehicle inspection report, if the motorcycle was previously registered outside Alberta.
    • A safety inspection certificate, if the motorcycle is designated as salvaged or rebuilt.

Visit a Registry Agent

Once the paperwork is complete, visit Alberta’s Registrations Are Us to transfer ownership of the motorcycle. We’ll issue a new registration certificate and license plate, and handle the transfer of ownership quickly and hassle-free.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Transfer

  • Check Out-of-Province Verification: If you’re buying a motorcycle from outside Alberta, double-check the VIN on the bike against the paperwork. This will help to ensure accuracy and legitimacy.
  • Complete a Lien Search: Before finalizing the purchase, run a Personal Property Lien Search. This will help you find out if there are any outstanding financial claims or liens on the bike.
  • Understand Specific Circumstances: If you’re transferring ownership of a motorcycle as a gift or inheritance, the rules in Alberta may be different. Speak with a registry agent for specific requirements in such cases.
