8 Essential Tips Before You Book Your Road Test in Edmonton

Book Your Road Test in Edmonton

You’ve put the time into studying and practicing, and now you’re ready for the next step — booking your Edmonton road test. It’s an exciting milestone towards getting your driver’s license. But before you begin, it’s important to be sure you and your vehicle are prepared.

If you don’t have a vehicle for your road test, Registrations Are Us can provide you with a road test rental car.

Follow these 8 essential tips to make sure you’re ready to book your road test:

1. Understand the Road Test

Before you book your road test, you’ll want to know what to expect when you get in the driver’s seat. When you arrive, the instructor will perform a quick inspection of the vehicle to ensure the essentials, like signal lights and windshield wipers, are functioning properly.

From there, they will get in the passenger seat and give directions as you drive. A basic road test should take approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Don’t have a vehicle? At Registrations Are Us, we can provide a road test rental car or motorcycle to get you on your way.

2. Make Sure Your Vehicle is Prepared

Before hitting the road, it’s crucial that your vehicle is in proper working order. Prior to booking, check your tire pressure, brakes, and mirrors. Test your headlights, signal lights, and brake lights to ensure you have no burned-out bulbs.

If there are issues with any of these components, you’ll need to get them repaired before you take your road test. You may also be asked to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the vehicle’s functions.

Make sure you have your registration and insurance documents available in the vehicle.

3. Master the Basics

Once on the road, you’ll be asked to handle basic maneuvres including:

  • Stopping and starting smoothly
  • Steering and staying in your lane
  • Accelerating and decelerating appropriately

Practicing these skills regularly and in different circumstances will improve your chances of performing them proficiently during your road test.

4. Practice Common Maneuvers

In addition to the basics, you’ll be expected to perform various maneuvers in traffic, including:

  • Shoulder checking and changing lanes
  • Various parking techniques – uphill, downhill, parallel
  • Merging
  • Reversing

You may also be expected to drive on the highway. Practice these skills in various settings and conditions to be sure you’ve mastered them prior to booking your road test.

5. Navigate Intersections

Both controlled and uncontrolled intersections can be complex. Before you book your road test, it’s essential to know how to navigate them safely:

  • Understand who has the right of way
  • Always watch for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Signal appropriately

Practice various maneuvers at different types of intersections to ensure you know the rules and expectations, and always proceed with caution.

6. Know the Traffic Laws

You’ll be expected to handle different traffic scenarios, including school zone speed limits and rush hour. At all times, obey traffic signals and speed limits while practicing a safe following distance. Be prepared to accommodate for pedestrians and cyclists in different circumstances, yielding right of way as needed.

7. Practice in Different Road Conditions

Edmonton is known for its variable weather. Ensure you’re prepared to adapt quickly to changing conditions. Whether it be rain, snow, or ice, you’ll want to quickly adjust your driving to accommodate. Nighttime driving may also be required depending on what time of day you book your road test.

Be comfortable with how the vehicle handles different situations and know how to alter your speed, following distance, and technique, accordingly.

8. Relax

It’s normal to be nervous during a test, but it’s important to stay calm and focused. Before you begin, take a deep breath and remind yourself to stay positive. While driving, breathe and relax your grip on the steering wheel. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, but be confident in your driving ability.
