Renew Alberta Driver’s Licence

Keep Your Alberta Driver’s Licence Current

Renewing early helps you avoid issues and gives you time to gather any additional documentation that may be required.

Starting July 2, 2026, Alberta driver’s licence and identification card renewals include new document requirements. The next time you renew, you must provide proof that you are legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada. Once this information has been verified, you generally will not need to provide it again unless your status changes.

Registrations Are Us can help you renew your Alberta driver’s licence in person at our Edmonton registry office and answer any questions about the new requirements.

  • Your physical Alberta Health Care (AHC) card or mobile health card

You must renew your Alberta driver’s licence before it expires to continue legally driving. You may renew your licence any time before your expiration date.

You can renew your Alberta driver’s licence in person at an authorized registry agent office like Registrations Are Us. Some renewals may require an in-person visit, especially when legal entitlement documents or Alberta Health Care eligibility need to be verified.

Yes. You can renew your Alberta driver’s licence early, depending on your expiration date. Renewing early can help you avoid delays, especially if you need to gather additional documents.

There is no renewal penalty, but you cannot legally drive with an expired driver’s licence. If your licence has expired for more than three years, you may need to complete testing again before reinstatement.

Yes. You can update your address during the driver’s licence renewal process. Make sure your address is current, so you can receive important notices and documents in a timely manner.

Yes. Before renewing your Alberta driver’s licence or ID card, you must provide proof that you are legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada. You must bring this proof with you the next time you renew at a registry agent.

No. You do not need to be a Canadian citizen to renew or obtain an Alberta driver’s licence or ID card. However, you do need to prove that you are legally entitled to be in or remain in Canada.

  • Canadian citizenship means you are officially recognized as a citizen of Canada.
  • Legal entitlement means you are legally allowed to be in or remain in Canada to live, work, or study in the country without being a citizen. This can include permanent residents of Alberta and individuals with certain valid immigration documents.

For driver’s licence and ID card renewals, Alberta requires proof of legal entitlement, not necessarily proof of Canadian citizenship. For more information about which documents you will need to bring, visit the Alberta government website.

Accepted documents may include a Canadian birth certificate, Canadian passport, Canadian citizenship certificate, Permanent Resident Card, Secure Certificate of Indian Status, or another valid document accepted by the Government of Alberta.

You may need to bring your physical Alberta Health Care card or mobile health card if your Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan eligibility needs to be revalidated. This is required when your Personal Health Number is being added to your driver’s licence or ID card.

If the name on your legal entitlement document is different from the name on your driver’s licence or ID card, you may need to bring supporting name change documents, such as a marriage certificate or legal name change document to provide proof.

If you cannot provide acceptable proof of legal entitlement, you may be eligible for a one-time 60-day grace period. You must visit a registry agent in person and pay the applicable fee to request it.
