An “out-of-province vehicle” refers to a motor vehicle (such as a car, truck, motorcycle, or recreational vehicle) that has been registered in a different Canadian province or territory or in a foreign country and is being brought into another Canadian province, in this case, Alberta. Once you’ve successfully registered your vehicle, you can sign up for text or email renewal reminders.

When registering an out-of-province vehicle, various documentation, inspections, and fees ensure the vehicle can be legally and safely operated in Alberta. We’re here to make sure you have everything you need to ensure a seamless process.
Step 1: Purchase an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Request form from Registrations Are Us (you will take this form to the mechanic performing the inspection). You require proof of vehicle ownership (Bill of Sale or Lease Agreement).
Step 2: Contact an authorized mechanic for an appointment and provide them with the out-of-province inspection form at the time of inspection. Find a vehicle inspection centre near you. Make sure you select Out-of-Province inspection, not Commercial or Salvage inspections.
Step 3: Once completed (and the vehicle passes inspection), the mechanic will give you the Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection Certificate. The certificate is valid for only 14 days from the date shown under Date of Completion. Do not delay bringing it into Registration Are Us so that we can enter it into the Alberta Motor Vehicle system.
You do not require an Alberta Out-of-Province inspection for a trailer or off-highway vehicle. You may not require an Alberta inspection for a passenger vehicle that meets the following criteria:

Along with the information above, your vehicle must also be present at the time of registration in order to have the serial number physically verified.
When you enter Canada, the Canadian Border Services Agency will provide you with a Vehicle Import Form – Form 1. Keep this form in your vehicle until it is Licenced, as you may be asked to show it if stopped by a police officer.
Once your vehicle has passed the federal inspection, the inspection centre will stamp your Vehicle Import Form – Form 1.
The Form 1 document must have 2 stamps:
Approximately 1 week after successfully passing the federal inspection, the Registrar of Imported Vehicles will send you a Canadian certification label with instructions on where to attach it to your vehicle.
